Women with pink ribbons representing breast cancer

Over the past 50 years, advancements in breast cancer prevention and treatment have saved the lives of many women and have given patients the opportunity to be part of the discussion in their treatment options. This is largely due to the breast cancer activism moment, lead by incredible and passionate women who were tired of seeing the world treating breast cancer poorly. Previously, a woman could wake up to her breasts removed without any discussion of her treatment plan, if cancer was detected during a biopsy. This procedure was considered the best chance of survival for the patient and the secrecy of the disease limited the discussion on a public format of other treatment options.

Before the mid-twentieth century, breast cancer was taboo. It’s heartbreaking to think that because women weren’t allowed to talk about breast cancer, many suffered in silence with limited resources to get the needed care for both their mental and physical health as they faced this disease.

Many famous historical women battled and lost their lives from breast cancer. For example, Savannah native and Girl Scout fonder Juliette Gordon Low was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1923 but was forced kept her diagnosis a secret. In 1962, Rachel Carson was testifying in Congress about the harmful effects of using pesticides while wearing a wig to hide the effects of her treatment. While these women were comfortable sharing their passion for advancements to better the lives of future generations, the social stigma attached to breast cancer discouraged them from sharing their battle with public.

What changed everything? A few courageous women who weren’t afraid to go against the social tide to speak their minds and make breast cancer a discussion. Thanks to them, incredible advancements in breast cancer care have been made. Join us in celebrating them in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
